Marc initially joined the ranks as a cavalryman during the First World War, but by February 1916, he had shifted his focus to military camouflage. Following the mobilization of the German Army, notable artists were identified for removal from combat for their protection. Marc was among those listed; however, before reassignment orders could reach him, he tragically succumbed to a fatal head injury caused by a shell splinter.
In 1913 and 1914, Marc devoted time to painting postcards for his intimate circle of friends. Fortunate recipients included fellow artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Erich Henkel, Paul Klee, as well as the playwright and poet Else Lasker-Schüler.
With a palette as vibrant as the rainbow, Marc stands out as the preeminent animal painter of the 20th century. These miniature artworks, often containing early versions of his later paintings, aim to persuade you of his greatness.
