Alexey Navalny, a jailed Russian opposition leader and outspoken Kremlin critic, has died at the age of 47 in the prison. The investigation is ongoing, thus, the reason behind his death is yet to be disclosed.

The prison service stated that he felt unwell after a walk and almost immediately lost consciousness. They also added they are investigating his sudden death.

He was treated in Germany after being poisoned with Novichok, a nerve toxin from the Soviet era. After the treatment, Alexei returned to Russia in 2021.

US Republican presidential hopeful and former UN ambassador Nikki Haley also spoke about his death. Haley has blamed Alexei Navalny’s reported death squarely at the feet of Vladimir Putin.

According to the BBC, Navalny looked well and laughing during a court hearing via video link, just a day before his sudden demise.

Followingly, his mother Lyudmila Navalnaya said he was “alive, healthy, and happy” when they saw him in prison on the 12th of February.

Meanwhile, Yulia Navalnaya, Navalny’s wife, demanded that Putin be held accountable. At the Munich Security Conference, she stated that she lacked confirmation of her husband’s demise.

Although there was no way to verify the events, Navalny’s close aide Leonid Volkov stated that the statement made by the prison officials amounted to a confession that they had killed him.

Update On Alexei Navalny’s Illness And Health

Alexei Navalny had a near-deadly poisoning that grabbed the world’s attention in 2020. He was hospitalized after falling ill and losing consciousness while on a domestic flight over Siberia.

At the time, his spokesman stated that he was poisoned, perhaps from a cup of tea he drank before the takeoff from Tomsk’s Bogashevo airport.

However, a Russian toxicologist insisted on having no poison on his body. They also added he might have fallen ill because of dieting, stress, or fatigue.

On the other hand, there was “unequivocal proof,” according to German officials, that Navalny was injected with a nerve agent from the Soviet era, Novichok.

His spokesperson Kira Yarmysh stated that it could be because of a slow-acting poison. She also added even though the prison food was making his condition worse, the authorities did not let him buy or eat other food.

Sadly on February 16, 2024, Navalny died as per the state media report, citing the prison service.
