Nayib Bukele’s religion has sparked discussions and controversies, with curiosity surrounding whether he is Muslim or Christian due to his dual ethnicity.

Nayib Armando Bukele Ortez is a Salvadoran politician and businessman who is the 43rd president of El Salvador serving since 1 June 2019.

He was re-elected as El Salvador president in a landslide win with enormous motives to eradicate grinding poverty and pervasive gang violence.

He previously served as the mayor of San Salvador representing the FMLN party before being expelled from the party in 2017 and inaugurating his party.

Is Nayib Bukele Muslim Or Christian?

The son of a Muslim imam and a Christian, Bukele portrays himself as a believer in God rather than an advocate of a religion.

Nayib Bukele Salvadoran, a politician and businessman elected President of El Salvador on February 3, 2019, is the first independent Salvadoran president.

Representative of the center-right party Nayib Bukele said, “I am not a person who believes very much in religious rituals. However, I do believe in God and Jesus Christ.”

He defended himself, saying that he considered himself a believer in God first and not related to any religion in a 2015 interview.

He further says “I believe in His word, and I believe in His word in the Bible. I know that God does not reject anyone because of their origins.”

The duality in his religion has also stirred a lot of criticism and negative impact on his political career and character giving a positive credit to the opposition.

Being born to a Muslim father and a Christian mother Bukele is questioned about the truth of his affiliation.

This made him receive criticism for performing prayers in the Muslim Mosque.

However, he publicly declared that he considers himself a devotee of the Christian religion on the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church.

From his interview, it could be seen that Nayib Bukele is not Muslim but follows Christianity.

Although he talked about following Jesus, he has not clarified if Nayib Bukele is Muslim or still follows the Islamic religion.

Bukele has identified as Roman Catholic but has also been vocal about his support for secular governance and has promoted religious freedom in El Salvador.

Nayib Bukele Religion Background And Origin

Nayib Bekele was born on July 24, 1981. His mother is Olga Ortiz Bekele, and his father is Armando Bekele Qattan.

Nayib’s father, a prominent businessman later converted to Islam and became an imam in El Salvador’s mosques.

According to The Times of Israel, Najib Bekele’s paternal grandparents were Palestinian Christians from Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

His maternal grandmother was Catholic, and his maternal grandfather was an Orthodox Christian.

Bukele was born into a Christian household, although his father later converted to Islam.
