He graduated from Rickards High School in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1969 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology / Chemistry from the University of Miami

Owens was one of four African American players who integrated onto a football team at a historically white high school.

He became one of the first four black athletes recruited to play football at the University of Miami.

The New York Jets selected Owens with the 13th pick in the first round of the 1973 NFL Draft.

Josie Owens completed her bachelor’s degree in education in 1974 amid the Boston school desegregation riots.

She continued her education, obtaining a master’s degree in public administration with a concentration in Management from Northeastern University in 1987.

Her commitment to learning led her to earn a doctorate from Boston University in 2003, specializing in Administration Training and Management.

Owens began her career at Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), where she worked for thirteen years. She balanced her professional life with her growing sense of calling to ministry during this time.

In 2000, Owens became the senior pastor of Second Church in Dorchester, all while continuing her work at Parkside.

In 2003, she stepped into the Assistant District Superintendent (DS) role under former DS Chuck Zink.

On May 11, 2021, Dr. Jossie Owens achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first black woman in the United States or Canada to be elected District Superintendent (DS) for the Church of the Nazarene.

His father, originally from Texas, moved to Columbus for graduate studies that he couldn’t complete in Texas due to Jim Crow laws.

The family later relocated to Tallahassee, Florida, where Owens’ father worked as a college professor.

Owens was raised in a Baptist home. He later embraced the Mormon faith and due to the Jim Crow laws prevailing in Texas, he couldn’t complete his studies there.

While specific details about Owens’ mother are not widely available, her influence undoubtedly played a role in shaping his character and values.

Burgess Owens has an interesting religious journey.

In 1982, Owens underwent baptism into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) after his Raiders teammate, Todd Christensen, introduced him to it.

About his career during his 10-season NFL career, he played safety for both the Jets and the Oakland Raiders, winning a championship with the Raiders in Super Bowl XV in 1980.

After retiring from the NFL, Owens founded several businesses and became the CEO of a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping troubled and incarcerated youth.

Running as a Republican, he won the Congressional election in 2020, narrowly defeating incumbent Democrat Ben McAdams.
